Youth Development and Violence Prevention

Family violence conditions children for further violence in their lives. It forces them to bury the parts of themselves that  feel empathy for others and slashes their expectations for respect others. It creates obstacles to success in all areas of their lives: academic, emotional, social, and physical. VIP has created a number of youth development programs designed to offer young people the opportunity to heal from past violence and build skills they need to succeed in their relationships, at school, in the workplace, and become strong leaders in their community.

Options for children and teens outside of traditional therapy include:
  • Signing-up for Mentoring & Tutoring
  • Joining the Santana House Youth Action Center
  • Participating in Between Men and Between Women support groups on their high school campuses aimed at preventing teen dating violence and developing healthy relationships
  • Joining "Think College", an innovative school-based program for middle schoolers and their families to help them navigate the education system

Young people who come to VIP need a safe place to go; supportive adults and peers they can count on and trust who connect them to resources; opportunities to enhance and broaden their skills and education; a network of familiar voices, faces, and hearts to give them the confidence to pursue their dreams and become the best versions of themselves.
