Anna sat there with both of her arms in splints, a bandage wrapped around her head. The x-ray technician tried but failed to communicate with her. Thrown down the stairs of her apartment by her son-in-law, she was afraid to tell anyone because she had no place else to go.
Family violence impacts all members of the community including the elderly and dependent adults. In partnership with Adult Protective Services and other city and county agencies, VIP manages a hospital-based multidisciplinary team for elderly and dependent adults to respond to this type of abuse.Medical services are provided by the VIP Adult Protection Team including:
- Forensic medical examinations for victims of elder abuse and dependent adult abuse
- Screening for abuse and neglect of patients 65 years and older at LAC+USC Medical Center
- Geriatric medical care for patients 65 years and older
- Primary care for dementia patients
- Referrals to sub-specialists, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, audiology, and ophthalmology
- Authorized medical equipment
- Preventive medical care
Working with medical services, VIP's Los Angeles County Elder Abuse Forensic Center (LACEAC) is a multidisciplinary team of professionals that provides expert and comprehensive case examination, documentation, consultation and prosecution of the growing number of elder and dependent adult abuse cases.
Services include:
- Multi-agency team case review and action plans
- Medical and neuropsychological evaluations
- Forensic evaluation and documentation
- In-home evidentiary investigation
- Recorded victim interviews
- Education and training
- Consultation
- Victim and social services
