Maria pushed her twin boys up our ramp at lunchtime. Both babies were blind since a premature delivery at six months, a result of a beating their mother received at the hands of their father. "He says he is going to kill me and the boys," she said.

In 1996, our staff realized that we could not treat the child without the mother, nor the mother without the child, and an innovative hospital-based domestic violence response team was founded at the VIP. This team works with all outpatient and inpatient services throughout LAC+USC Medical Center and the community. The team is available 24 hours a day and provides support to victims and the medical staff. Services protect the rights of the mother and child with an emphasis on prevention. Outreach to the local community is also provided through school-based domestic violence services and prevention curriculum to junior and high school students.
